System Won't Turn On
When neither heat nor AC will start, the cause is often simple—a tripped breaker, dead thermostat or full condensate pan—but it can also be a failed control board or transformer.
Call: 1 (800) 555-0199Warning signs
- Blank thermostat screen
- Nothing happens when you change the setting
- The system starts briefly, then shuts off
- Water in the drain pan under the indoor unit
What to do right now
- Replace thermostat batteries
- Check breakers for both the indoor and outdoor units
- Check the furnace door is fully closed (a safety switch stops the system)
- Check whether the condensate pan is full—a float switch will shut the system off
What the HVAC technician will do
A technician will trace power from the breaker to the thermostat, test the transformer, fuses, safety switches and control board.
What affects the cost
Fuses, float switches and thermostats are inexpensive; control boards and transformers cost more. Pricing is set by the independent provider—ask for the trip charge and an estimate before work begins.
Safety first
- Carbon monoxide alarm sounding? Get everyone outside and call 911.
- Smell gas? Leave now and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Don't flip switches.
- Dangerous heat or cold in your home? Don't wait for a repair—go somewhere safe and check on vulnerable family and neighbors.
